Kid-friendly lurgy-busting brew

Here is another excellent home remedy and something we have a lot at home during this time of year. Basically, super-loaded stewed apples that, like the garlic oxymel, can be part of your winter kitchen remedy kit.

Rich in Vitamin C, immune-boosting and antimicrobial properties, this recipe is more kid-friendly than the oxymel (though, kids can take that!… my daughter does). It’s super easy too. Give it a go!

  • Peel and chop 6 medium apples, add just enough water to cover and simmer.
  • After 5 min, add a thumb of grated ginger, the juice of half a lime or small lemon, a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and (if you have them) 1-2 peeled and chopped kiwi fruit. Simmer for another 15-20 minutes, until the apples are soft.
  • This will be very tart! Add honey to taste, ideally not more than a tablespoon, and stir through fruit mixture while still warm.
  • Puree until soft and serve up whenever there is a lurgy about.

For kids, start with a spoonful morning and evening, which can be increased as needed. This can be eaten directly off the spoon, mixed through a little yoghurt, dolloped on porridge… or all of the above!

Additional ingredients (depending on availability and your / your child’s palette) can include warming herbs and spices such as cinnamon and fresh garlic.
