A sore throat fix

For the past couple of days I’ve had a killer sore throat – like stabby little razors each time I swallow – and the edge of a cold. It’s a pain; particularly as we’re away from our new home for the week, which means I don’t have any of my usual remedies on hand. I’m also wrangling a baby who’s decided sleeping is for chumps, so resting is out of the question. Regardless, there are still plenty of things I can do while we’re on the road that will squash my symptoms and help prevent this turning into a fully-fledged cold.

Eating fresh: I don’t have my own kitchen (or, indeed, any kitchen) at the moment, but that doesn’t mean I can’t eat well. This means making the best available choices when eating out. It also means having some fruit and veg on hand for snacks and dinner picnics. Happily, I found a couple of places with awesome organic produce to stock up on.

Herbal tea: I’ve got a nursing tea on high rotation at the moment, so I’m making sure to get in at least a couple of cups a day, along with plenty of water. This keeps me hydrated, helps to loosen congestion and soothes my sore throat.

Gargling hot salty water: it doesn’t taste delicious, but hot salty water is an easy remedy that helps to relieve that scratchy feeling in my throat.

Suck on that: I got my hands on some zinc, echinacea and elder lozenges which, along with some truly awful tasting oregano oil, are helping both to soothe my sore throat and combat infection.

Green it up: And, for an extra nutrient hit, I’ve been enjoying green smoothies – packed with nutritious ingredients and, at my request, heaps of extra ginger.

Now… if I could just get some SLEEP. That would be the icing on the cake!
